Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair
Saturday, December 3, 2011
First Presbyterian and First Baptist Churches
(Side by side on Dewitt Park, 309 / 315 N. Cayuga St.)
The Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair offers holiday shoppers a choice of gifts to honor family and friends while supporting charities and non-profit organizations in a festive atmosphere. Holiday shoppers browse displays and tables from over sixty local non-profit and social service agencies.
The Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair is a fun way to bypass the annual stress of holiday shopping and “stuff” accumulation while honoring friends and relatives with donations in their name. What’s more, the Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair provides critical support for a diverse collection of community organizations whose work has local, national, and international reach.
How Does It Work?
Each participating organization offers variously priced gifts that have a specific purpose. Past gift examples include:
· $5 for a compact fluorescent light bulb given to a local, rural household
· $10 for a week of school, clothing and two meals a day for an orphan in Zambia
· $100 for the “Golden Opportunity” scholarship fund to help students remain successful in area schools.
This year there will be over 300 gift options to choose from. For each donation, the giver receives a holiday card with a description of the organization and gift. The organization to which your contribution is made receives 100% of your donation.
The Ithaca Alternative Gift Fair is sponsored by the Center for Transformative Action with generous support from Tompkins Community Action, Alternatives Federal Credit Union, Lightlink, Tompkins County Public Library, and Acorn Designs.
