CDRC Volunteer Mediators
"CDRC mediators well understand that there is nothing more empowering than the ability to support the empowerment of others"
Our volunteers are the backbone of CDRC!
CDRC's mediators are professionally trained community volunteers that have met the requirements established by the New York State Unified Court System. Prior to the training and apprenticeship process, each applicant is interviewed by CDRC and encouraged to consider the rewards and challenges of being a neutral third party (mediator) and the amount of availability they would have to mediate. All CDRC volunteers are required to make a minimum two-year commitment as a CDRC mediator.
A rigorous training and apprenticeship process begins with four days of training by a UCS-ADR certified trainer. CDRC volunteers are trained in the theory and practice of Transformative Mediation. This intensive and interactive training focuses on the three core activities of the mediator that work in tandem to create a space for individuals in conflict to transform their interactions and resolve their disputes as appropriate. The training includes many exercise and role-play opportunities to practice and become familiar with the core activities of the mediator. This initial training is followed by a one hour video-taped role-play mediated by the trainee, and assessed by the CDRC training team.
Once the volunteer trainee and the Training Team agree that the volunteer is ready to move foward, the volunteer then becomes an apprentice. The apprenticeship consists of two parts; observing and assessing two CDRC mediations and co-mediating at least two mediation sessions with an experienced mediation coach. It generally takes six months for a trainee to complete the CDRC training and apprenticeship.
Mediators must participate in at least six hours of additional training every year the serve as a CDRC volunteer. Advanced training is available for mediators wishing to begin mediating certain kinds of cases or for particular mediation programs (ex. Special Education, Elder).
